About Monica Brown

Monica M. Brown is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist working
with a broad spectrum of clients. Ms. Brown works with individuals,
families, couples, adolescents, children and groups.

EDUCATION
Ms. Brown received her MA in Counseling Psychology in 1994  from California Institute of Integral
Studies, located in San Francisco, CA. The curriculum combined Western Psychology with Eastern
Philosophy.  Ms Brown’s undergraduate work includes a double major in Psychology and Philosophy-
Religious Studies from the University of Wisconsin – Steven’s Point (1990) and an AA in Business
Administration-Management from Golden Gate University, San Francisco (1985).

TRAINING
Ms. Brown’s training includes internships and practicum placements at California Institute of Integral
Studies, New Perspectives in San Francisco, and Xanthos/Alameda Family Service in Alameda, CA.
During her internship at Alameda Family Service, Ms. Brown worked extensively with families and
children in middle and high school settings. Ms. Brown developed a specialization working with At-Risk
students and families.

EXPERIENCE
During her internship at Alameda Family Service, Ms. Brown was hired as Coordinator for the Middle
School Counseling Program, and stayed at Alameda Family Service for six years.  During her tenure,
Ms. Brown increased the program from two to four schools, brought in additional funding, and hired and
trained MFT interns to work in the schools counseling students.

After four years in that position, Ms. Brown took over Tri-High Health Services, the school based health
center located at Alameda High School. After being in the position for several months, Ms. Brown set up
an entirely brand new health center at Encinal High School, having the empty portable furnished,
stocked, and a staff on board within six weeks. The School Based Health Centers continue today to be a
successful and important asset to the students at the high schools, and to  the Alameda Unified School
District.

Ms. Brown left Alameda Family Service to move into private practice, and was invited to join a group
practice at Allied Psychology Group Inc. During the eight years Ms. Brown was associated with Allied she
became the CFO and Business Partner/Owner in the group. The group dissolved March 2007, and Ms.
Brown transitioned back into private practice.

During the time at Alameda Family Service, Ms. Brown was responsible for hiring, training, and
supervising staff, both clinical and non-clinical, public speaking in the community, and various
presentations in the bay area.  Ms. Brown also provided individual, family, and group counseling.

After leaving Alameda Family Service and while setting up private practice, Ms. Brown served as a
Counseling Consultant with Dublin Unified School District, working at Murray Elementary School, and
later at Nielsen Elementary School. When funding ran out, Ms. Brown started working with Woodstock
Elementary School in Alameda, CA and consulted with Ruby Bridges Elementary School,
which is a new school that opened in September 2006. This school combined three elementary schools:
Woodstock, Longfellow, and Miller. Ms. Brown provides individual and group counseling to students K-5
and counseling support to families, parents,  and staff.

Ms. Brown is also a Group Facilitator with Kid’s Turn, a San Francisco based group specializing in
families and children going through separation and divorce. Ms. Brown has worked with Kid’s Turn since
1997.

Prior experience was in the corporate world where Ms. Brown spent nearly twenty years working within
the financial services industry. Some of the major corporations Ms. Brown worked at include Chubb
Group of Insurance Companies, Fireman’s Fund in San Francisco, Marsh & McLennan Brokerage, and
Crum & Forster Insurance Companies. Ms. Brown’s last position within the industry was with the Chubb
Group as the San Francisco Umbrella/Excess Underwriting Manager.
